Your Dessert Deserves a Round of Applause

Hi Reader,

Somewhere between the second potluck and my third “simple dessert contribution,” I realized I’d become my circle's designated Pastry Sherpa. You know the role—the one who arrives with a cake carrier clutched like a newborn, silently praying that buttercream holds its shape until dessert.

Bringing sweets to a holiday gathering feels like entering a culinary gladiator pit. You spend hours coaxing a batter to behave, only to dodge traffic, icy sidewalks, and Aunt Florrie's unsolicited feedback: “Mine never sinks in the middle.” (Sure, Flo, sure.) But when the foil finally peels back, and everyone goes quiet for that first bite—pure redemption and complete vindication.

These days, I bake with less panic and a little more pragmatism. I cool the cake all the way (patience, my least favorite ingredient), pack extra napkins, and remind myself: perfection doesn’t feed anyone. Joy does. And maybe a little frosting on the steering wheel.

A Heartfelt Thank You

A while ago, I mentioned how tough things are for sites like mine due to AI. I had mentioned that one way to help is to leave reviews, star ratings, and photos of the recipes you make from LC. And, boy, did you come through! There have been so many reviews and constructive comments since I asked that I'm overwhelmed! So thank you so much for pitching in. As I promised, I answer everyone, although it's taking me a little longer these days because of the number! But I'm so grateful. Please keep the reviews coming!

My 5 Golden Rules for Showstopping Desserts

  1. Cool Before You Move. Warm cake + cold car = frosting meltdown. Let it rest completely before traveling.
  2. Double the Flavor, Not the Fuss. A touch of citrus zest or a drizzle of liqueur can wake up old standbys.
  3. Transport Like a Pro. Chill cheesecakes, freeze buttercreams briefly, and wrap tightly before boxing up.
  4. Garnish with Gusto. A dusting of powdered sugar or a ring of cranberries turns “nice” into “Jump back and get outta town!”
  5. Bake for Joy, Not Judgement. No one remembers the perfect crumb—they remember who brought the cake.

Hi Reader, Every January, I find myself in a sort of culinary limbo—caught between the glittering madness of the holidays and the quiet murmur of a new year. The fridge looks like it’s survived a small war: a spoonful of cranberry sauce, a nub of cheese that could qualify as a fossil, and a wilted sprig of rosemary that’s seen better days. That’s when The One wanders in, holding a mug of coffee and arching an eyebrow. “You’re reorganizing your life again, aren’t you?” he says, gesturing toward...

Hi Reader, When I think about the past year in food, I don’t look at trends or analytics dashboards—I look at you. What you cooked. What you clicked. What you rated with five stars and a “David, this recipe saved my life” message. And let me tell you: this year, you had opinions. Glorious, passionate, fork-wielding opinions. Some recipes shot straight to the top so fast I wondered if you were all texting each other behind my back. Others quietly climbed the charts week after week because you...

Hi Reader, New Year’s Eve has always amused me. It’s the one night we collectively pretend we’re the kind of people who waltz into parties wearing something sparkly, carrying flawless canapés, and greeting everyone like we’re hosting the Oscars. Meanwhile, I’m in the kitchen debating whether I have the emotional bandwidth to iron a napkin. But I love this night. It’s theatrical. It’s indulgent. It’s forgiving. You can get away with almost anything as long as it’s bite-sized and served on a...
